Happy 40th Birthday Ehhole!?

It’s that time of year again. Time to celebrate another birthday. Only the birthday I celebrate today is tough. 40 years old is a hard one to get your head around. It feels like I’ve entered the pre-death phase of my life. That’s the negative that comes with 40 talking. But it’s also kind of true. There’s no getting around it. You’re getting old when you hit 40. At least that’s what everybody else will tell you. But it’s a crucial time in one’s life and you can’t let the negative get the best of you.

I’ve always believed, even from a very young age, that your 40s is the most important decade of your life. I think it takes you 40 years to figure out who you are and to be comfortable with that person. That’s the foundation we’re really looking for. Yes, we’ve grown a lot to get to this point. We’ve grown through making mistakes. Now it’s time to grow in a controlled manner. Grow our families, our business, our hobbies, our retirement fund, ourselves as good people and citizens. Let’s face it, if you’re an unadulterated mess when you’re 40, good luck to you. The chances of turning it around grow exponentially less and less with every passing year. I know I’ve made enough mistakes and felt the worry and dread that comes with it. If I want to live to 100 with quality of life then I know my body and psyche can’t afford any more negative brought on by myself. Peace in Every Step as Thich Nhat Hanh would say.

So for all those born in 1971, Happy 40th. I share your joy and I feel your pain. Be happy with who you are and where you’re at. There really is no scorecard. Just people’s memories of you. So although it will be the best of times, today it feels like the worst of times. But that’s OK. You have to have rain to appreciate the sun.
